How to Register a Motorcycle in Saskatchewan
Every street-use motorcycle in Saskatchewan must be registered and meet the requirements in The Vehicle Equipment Regulations before it can be ridden on public roads.
New motorcycles
No inspection is required. Bring the New Vehicle Information Statement (NVIS) from your dealer and the bill of sale to a SGI motor licence issuer near you. Dealers can issue a temporary permit so you can ride it to your issuer for registration.
Used motorcycles
Provide proof of ownership (bill of sale, lease agreement, or previous registration). No inspection is needed if it was previously registered in Saskatchewan with a Normal, Rebuilt or Registerable TLV status.
Out-of-province or imported motorcycles
A mechanical inspection is required if the motorcycle hasn't been previously registered in Saskatchewan, or was most recently registered elsewhere with a Normal, Rebuilt, Damaged or Salvage status. Imported motorcycles also need a K22 Customs Clearance Card.
VIN and serial number
Most motorcycles have a 17-digit VIN on the frame plus a separate serial number on the engine and transmission — you'll need both to register. If there's no stamped VIN or compliance label, VIN Verification Services Inc. can issue one for a fee. If you replace the engine or transmission, notify SGI when you renew.
Helmet law
Saskatchewan law requires drivers and passengers to wear an approved, properly fastened helmet, based on National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) standards.
Off-road motorcycles and ATVs
Motorcycles with a Restricted Use Motorcycle (RUM) or ATV designation can't be registered or ridden on public roads unless a municipal bylaw specifically allows it.
