Vehicle Inspections in Saskatchewan: When You Need One and What They Cost
SGI requires certain vehicles to pass an inspection before they can be registered or re-registered — typically vehicles new to Saskatchewan, rebuilt after major damage, or previously deemed a total loss.
Mechanical safety inspection
Confirms your vehicle is mechanically safe to drive, including certain structural checks, but it doesn't cover the engine, transmission, air conditioning or surface rust that isn't structural. A 4-wheel alignment check is included; extra charges apply only if adjustment or repairs are needed.
Cost: shop rate × 1.5 hours for small vehicles (up to and including half-ton trucks), or × 2 hours for large vehicles. Only GST applies.
Body integrity inspection
Required for vehicles with major structural repairs (e.g., after a serious collision). You must book an initial inspection before starting repairs, get a Cross-Canada VIN search, and follow a Rebuilt Vehicle Work Plan the inspection station prepares based on manufacturer repair procedures. This inspection must be completed within 120 days of the initial inspection, by the same station that started it. Cost is based on the inspection station's hourly shop rate multiplied by actual time spent.
Total loss vehicles
If repair costs plus salvage value exceed the vehicle's value, it's a total loss. Registered total loss vehicles must be inspected within 60 days or before registration expires, whichever comes first. Once passed, they're branded a "rebuilt total loss vehicle" under the national Stolen and Wrecked Vehicle Monitoring Program.
Motorcycle inspections
A 1-hour visual inspection of structural and body components (frame, forks, gas tank, fenders, etc.). Motorcycles first registered in 1987 or earlier are exempt from the first-time registered inspection requirement.
If you fail
You get a Failed Record of Inspection listing every defect. You have 30 days to get repairs done (anywhere) and return for a free reinspection, as long as major parts don't need removing again. Miss the 30 days and you'll need a full inspection again, at your cost.
