Registering a New or Used Vehicle in Saskatchewan: Step-by-Step

Proof of ownership

You'll need one of: a bill of sale, a lease agreement, or a completed Transfer of Ownership form (found on the seller's registration certificate). The name on the ownership document must exactly match the name(s) the vehicle will be registered under.

New vehicles

Bring the vehicle's New Vehicle Information Statement (NVIS) from the dealer, or a Manufacturer's Statement of Origin if purchased outside Canada, plus the bill of sale. Dealers may give you a temporary permit to drive to your issuer for registration.

Used vehicles

  • Previously registered in Saskatchewan: a completed Transfer of Ownership form or bill of sale.
  • Previously registered outside Saskatchewan, or a total loss: a vehicle inspection plus a bill of sale.

Used vehicles bought privately for personal or farm use are PST-exempt on the first $5,000 of the purchase price (or Red Book value, whichever is greater). Above $5,000, PST applies to the full amount. New vehicles and dealer sales don't qualify for this exemption. A trade-in allowance reduces the taxable amount on any vehicle, new or used.

Buyer-beware basics

Saskatchewan retail sales are final — there's no cooling-off period unless the seller states otherwise. Before buying privately: verify the seller's identity and address, check for liens through Information Services Corporation, run a VIN search, and get a mechanic's inspection on anything you haven't test-driven and verified in person.
