Snowmobile Registration and Rules in Saskatchewan

Unlike ATVs, snowmobiles in Saskatchewan do require registration under The Snowmobile Act before you can legally ride on public land — here's what's required and where you're allowed to go.

Registration

Register your snowmobile at any SGI motor licence issuer near you. You don't need to register it if you're only riding on privately owned land you own or have permission to use.

Where you can ride

  • Designated snowmobile trails
  • Private land or leased Crown land (with the landowner/tenant's permission — verbal, written, or via posted signage, required since January 1, 2022)
  • Crown land, generally, unless posted signs or regulations say otherwise
  • Ditches along provincial highways, generally permitted unless prohibited
  • Ditches or public areas within a municipality — check local bylaws first, some municipalities restrict this
  • Parks — check with the specific Park Authority

Licensing requirements by age

  • Born before Jan. 1, 1989: no mandatory training course (though SGI still recommends taking one).
  • Born on or after Jan. 1, 1989: must complete a snowmobile safety course, and either hold a Class 1-5 driver's licence, or be at least 16.
  • Age 12-15: complete a snowmobile safety course and be accompanied by a licensed driver (either riding with you, or supervising from another snowmobile).
  • Age 15 with a Class 7 learner's licence: can ride on the travelled portion of a road (where bylaws allow it) while supervised or accompanied by a licensed driver.

Without a driver's licence, you can't drive on the travelled portion of a road at all, except to cross it directly.

Equipment standards

Your snowmobile must meet the requirements set out in The Vehicle Equipment Regulations, 1987.
