E-Scooter Rules in Saskatchewan: What's Legal and What's Not
E-scooters are legal to ride in Saskatchewan — but only where your local municipality has passed a bylaw allowing them. No bylaw means no legal riding, regardless of the vehicle itself.
What qualifies as an e-scooter
Saskatchewan defines e-scooters as "limited speed motor vehicles" (LSMV) with:
- Up to 4 wheels (430 mm diameter or less)
- A standing platform and steering handlebar
- Electric motor(s) totalling 500W or less
- A max speed of 24 km/h on flat, paved ground
- A weight of 45 kg or less
- Brakes that stop it within 9 metres from full speed
It can't have a seat (or anything that could serve as one), pedals, or an enclosing structure.
No driver's licence or registration needed
E-scooters don't require registration or a driver's licence — but that doesn't mean anything goes.
Check your municipality's bylaws first
Whether e-scooters are allowed — and where — is entirely up to your local town or city. Contact your municipal office to confirm. If your municipality has no e-scooter bylaw, riding one is illegal there.
If your municipality allows them, you must:
- Follow all Traffic Safety Act rules that apply to vehicles
- Be at least 16 years old
- Wear an approved motorcycle or bicycle helmet
- Only ride on roads with a posted speed limit of 50 km/h or less (your municipality may restrict further)
- Ride solo — no passengers
- Not tow anything
