Saskatchewan Vehicle Registration Classes Explained
Every vehicle registered with SGI is sorted into a class based on its type and use. Your class determines equipment rules, registration fees, insurance premiums and your deductible if you're ever in a claim.

Everyday classes
- Light Vehicles (LV): cars, SUVs, light vans and trucks (1-ton and under), motorhomes/buses under 15,000 kg, motorcycles and mopeds. Can be used privately, commercially, or for rideshare if authorized.
- Private Passenger Vehicles (PV): personal-use vans and trucks over 1-ton, and motorhomes/buses over 15,000 kg.
- Farm Vehicles (F): light and heavy trucks, trailers, heavy vans and power units used for farming — see our farm vehicle registration guide for eligibility.
Commercial heavy truck classes

Most commercial vehicles also need a National Safety Code Number (NSC) and fitness certificate.
Specialty classes
- Commercial Trailer (TS): trailers/semi-trailers used in a business, sharing the towing unit's hauling authority.
- Taxis (PT) and rideshare/limousine (PB, PC): vehicles transporting passengers for hire.
- School buses (PS): buses and vans used for student transport.
- Snowmobiles (MT): all snowmobiles.
- Dealer classifications (Class L and others): for licensed auto, motorcycle and snowmobile dealers only.

What's the difference between Class A, C and D commercial plates?
