Importing a Vehicle to Saskatchewan: Rules, Inspections and PST

Importing from the United States
You must meet requirements from the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV), Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Transport Canada. Check the vehicle's VIN status on CARFAX or CARPROOF before buying — a "junk" or "non-repairable" status generally blocks registration, and any flood damage in the history permanently disqualifies the vehicle from registration in Canada.
Moving to Saskatchewan with your vehicle
New residents can use their out-of-province registration and insurance for up to 90 days. To register here, take your out-of-province registration to any SGI motor licence issuer near you; in most cases the vehicle needs a mechanical safety inspection first.
New West Partnership inspection exemption
If you're moving from Alberta or British Columbia, your vehicle may be exempt from the first-time inspection if it's a passenger car, van, light truck or motorcycle under 4,536 kg GVW, has a normal IRE status, and is either less than 4 years old or was inspected under an NWP government program in the last 90 days.
Settler's effects PST exemption
New residents may qualify for a PST exemption if they were registered owners of the vehicle for at least 30 days before moving, lived outside Saskatchewan for the previous 6+ months, and the vehicle remains for personal use. Business assets and leased vehicles generally don't qualify (leased vehicles have separate PST rules based on the lease agreement).
Moving out of Saskatchewan
Once you register in your new province, cancel your Saskatchewan registration through MySGI, in person at an issuer, or by mail/fax — include a forwarding address for any refund.
