Out-of-Province and Visitor Driver's Licence Rules in Saskatchewan
Not everyone driving in Saskatchewan needs a Saskatchewan licence right away. Here's how the rules differ for visitors, students, temporary workers and new residents.
Visitors
If you're visiting Saskatchewan, your existing licence generally carries the same privileges it has at home — except for Class 1 vehicles (semis), which require mandatory training and a Saskatchewan Class 1 licence. If your licence isn't in English or French, carry an acceptable translation, such as an International Driving Permit.
Note: you're only eligible to apply for a Saskatchewan licence or non-driver photo ID if you hold a valid Work Permit, Study Permit, or Super Visa (with proof of eligibility to remain in Canada for at least one year).
Temporary workers
- From Canada or the US: no restrictions — your licence carries the same privileges it does at home.
- From elsewhere: same privileges apply, except for Class 1 vehicles, which require MELT and a Saskatchewan Class 1 licence.
Workers from certain reciprocal countries in the agricultural sector have an exemption on Class 1 requirements until May 21, 2027.
Students
Full-time students at a Saskatchewan educational institution can drive on their out-of-province licence (except Class 1 vehicles) for as long as they remain a full-time student and the licence stays valid.
New residents
